Hi Kate! I was wondering what your daily schedule looks like? As an actor and a writer, are you always on set?
LULZ, no.
It’s actually a real treat to get to a set, that’s like — end game. My USUAL days are a lot less exciting and a little more loose. I would actually say there’s no “usual” day, really, because my schedule can change at the drop of a hat. If I get an audition, everything shifts. If I do actually book, obviously that will make my day look completely different. But if you’re a young artist looking to make the move to L.A. and you want to know what things usually shake out to look like, here’s my “schedule”*.
*do not get attached to your schedule for it is not in stone.
9:00am -ish. I usually wake up around this time, though lately I have been having a terrible time sleeping at night. Still, I have pets to feed and coffee to make so between 9 & 10 I need to get up.
9:00-11:00am. Coffee. Blog. Breakfast. Feed animals. Tweet. Social media. Tutoring emails. I know everything says “omg don’t social media right away! don’t answer emails right away! do other things!” but I haven’t been able to shake that habit and I also hate fighting myself. So, that’s what this time is for.
~11:00am-12:30am. Dog walk or run, exercise if I’m feeling it.
12:30-1pm. Lunch! Usually working through it, just eating at my computer.
1-3:00pm. I try writing a little here or doing other administrative work if I’m not catching the right writing wave. Production planning, social for The Long Dig (or whatever). I also work on my scenes for class or auditions here — but those also pop up throughout the day. I play with them while I walk the dog or cook, for example.
3:00-7:30ish pm. These are tutoring hours. I am not always booked straight from 3pm to 8, but that’s when most kids can make sessions so that’s generally when I get the day job in. The nice thing is I’m pretty much wrapped by 8 and can head home because that’s when the library closes!
8:00-9:00pm. Dinner. + Animal Dinner. I eat 99% of my meals at home, so I cook ’em up and sit down to eat. I’m trying to kick a VERY bad habit of eating in front of the TV, so I grab my book or play a video game while I eat.
9:00pm or so. Dog walk, usually short. Play with the foster kittens, my cats, play a game — it’s basically free time. Whatever strikes! Shower, get ready for bed.
??? o’clock. What is bed. What is time. I TRY to head up to bed by about 11pm, but then I wind up reading for like TWO HOURS and suddenly it’s one in the morning and then my brain won’t STOP IT OH JESUS, GO TO SLEEP and bam, 4!
Like I said: working on it.
So that’s … most of my days! What are yours like?
